Journalists Union Warns Houthis Against Seizing Writers' Union Headquarters

The Yemeni Journalists Syndicate has issued a stern warning against any attempt by the Houthi militia to seize the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the Yemeni Writers and Authors Union in Sanaa or confiscate its assets. This warning follows the union receiving an eviction order for its premises in the Al-Raqas district.

In a statement, the syndicate declared that targeting the union's headquarters, library, and archives constitutes an assault on one of the most prominent symbols of Yemeni cultural memory. It cautioned that such actions are part of a trajectory that threatens the remaining civil society institutions, professional syndicates, and unions.

The syndicate expressed deep concern regarding information about the union's headquarters guard being served a judicial eviction notice. It emphasized that this development raises fears of concerted efforts to gain control of the building and its contents.

The organization urged the Houthi militia to cease all actions targeting the union, to respect its independence and legal rights, and to ensure the protection of its headquarters, library, and archives from any tampering or confiscation.

Sources within the General Secretariat of the Yemeni Writers and Authors Union had previously reported that individuals, acting on behalf of the Houthi militia, arrived at the union's Sanaa headquarters and presented the building's guard with an eviction order. However, the guard reportedly refused to accept or sign the document.

The Yemeni Writers and Authors Union is recognized as one of the oldest cultural institutions in the country, with a significant historical presence in Yemeni literary and cultural life for decades.
