Houthi Recruit Reveals Coercive Tactics Used to Deploy Youth to Frontlines

A captured Houthi combatant has revealed that he and a group of other young men were coerced into frontline service after being lured under the false pretense of a recreational trip to the coastal city of Mocha.

The 18-year-old prisoner, captured by the Giants Brigades, stated in a recorded confession that he had initially joined a Houthi-run summer camp following an invitation from group affiliates. After spending approximately one month at the facility, he and several other recruits were informed that they would be taken on an excursion to the coast.

According to the testimony, the group was permitted to swim upon their arrival in Mocha, only to be surprised when they were subsequently issued weapons and forcibly transported to the Kahboub front. Once there, they were immediately thrust into active armed conflict against their will.

This account highlights a systematic recruitment pipeline that utilizes summer centers to indoctrinate and mobilize young individuals before deploying them to combat zones. The incident has intensified concerns regarding the exploitation of educational and social programming to facilitate military mobilization among vulnerable youth populations.

In his statement, the captured youth warned his peers against responding to Houthi recruitment drives, urging them to avoid the group's influence to escape the fate he and his associates suffered. Meanwhile, Yemeni human rights organizations have called upon international bodies to intervene and pressure the Houthis to shutter these summer centers, which reports and victim testimonies suggest have been repurposed as clandestine recruitment camps for minors.
